Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing over 6,000 people. Damage to the Visayas region was catastrophic, with UN officials estimating about 11 million people were affected. A number of our team members are from the Philippines and we are thankful that their immediate families, relatives and friends were not directly in the path of Typhoon Yolanda.
The Filipino Community of BVI immediately began a fundraising campaign for relief for those affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Claire Santillan, one of our audit managers, lead the Baker Tilly staff fundraising campaign. By the end of November 2013, Claire reported back on the fundraising efforts and her research about how the funds should be donated. Claire’s belief was that the best contribution would be something that would provide both relief and rehabilitation.
Her recommendation was for the funds to be donated to The Peter Project 2 of the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation, Inc. (“NVC”), a non-stock, non-profit organisation registered with the Philippines’ Securities and Exchange Commission. Typhoon Yolanda left 9,500 fishermen in Northern Panay and 981 in Negros Occidental without fishing boats to earn a living for their families who are already reeling from the destruction of their houses and loss of most of their belongings. In response to this need, NVC Foundation launched The Peter Project 2 to focus on the rehabilitation of fishermen’s livelihood in Yolanda-struck areas by providing them fishing boats as replacement for the ones they lost.
